Deacons joins OSC to give back to the community

Deacons, the city's oldest and largest independent law firm, has become a major donor of Operation Santa Claus.

Lilian Chiang, a senior partner of Deacons, said the decision was made because the charities which the Operation Santa Claus supports were well-deserving.

'We are also attracted to Operation Santa Claus because the money we raise will directly benefit the charities, and during the fund-raising event period it organises plenty of activities that the donors can have exchanges with the beneficiaries,' Chiang said.

'We look forward to these activities that our colleagues can participate in.

'Hong Kong is where we operate and benefit. We have a social responsibility to give back to the community.

'Our partners believe our success should be measured not only in financial terms but also in human terms.'

Operation Santa Claus is an annual fund-raising appeal jointly organised by the South China Morning Post and Radio Television Hong Kong. Since setting up in 1988, it has supported more than 100 charities.

Money raised this year will go to 16 charities that provide assistance to the needy in Hong Kong and on the mainland.

The 160-year-old Deacons has a proud history of being involved in philanthropy works. Its lawyers regularly provide free legal advice to charitable organisations.

'We use our skill and knowledge to do pro-bono work. Our commitment to pro-bono work is no less than our commitment to our clients proper,' Chiang said.

The law firm supports many fund-raising activities, ranging from those organised by the Community Chest to events that raised money for construction workers who suffer serious work-related injuries and a philanthropic fund that provides assistance to underprivileged children across Asia.

'Engagement of this kind is very encouraging. It has a positive influence on our colleagues who found the activities meaningful. It instils a strong sense of pride as well as satisfaction in our colleagues in serving the community and improves their perception of our firm,' Chiang said.
