Futuristic

Paco Rabanne may have pioneered the space-age look back in the 1960s (see page 6), but today's designers are reinterpreting his legacy in a more wearable way. Star Trek outfits are long gone and in their place are minimalist cuts, technical fabrics and cool finishes. Phoebe Philo at Celine looked to the future for her recent resort collection, which featured an all-white outfit consisting of loose white trousers and a long-sleeved chiffon blouse covered in panels of crisp cotton, cut into sharp squares for a sleek look. If you find the precise lines and clean shapes too harsh, choose accessories made from fabrics given a mirrored or metallic finish, or that are made from more unusual materials such as plastic and resin. Just remember to never look back!

Bags are all about cool effects as seen on Marc Jacobs' Cosmic Croc tote (HK$18,900), which is made from crocodile skin treated with a mirrored finish.

Stay away from clear or plastic shoes as they can look tacky. Instead, opt for simple shapes such as the silver metallic leather Walsh ballerinas (inquiries: 2525 6068) from Jimmy Choo.

The white gold Talisman ring (starting at HK$43,500) from De Beers features a rough diamond set in textured gold paved with diamonds for a modern look. If you like costume pieces, try resin accessories such as these transparent African Space bangles (HK$6,500 each) from Dior, which can be worn stacked high on the arms.
