The people who brought us the Beijing Club are banking on the fact that Hongkongers would rather rock on than work out. They have taken over the 13,000 sq ft space over the road on the corner of Wellington Street that housed the California Fitness gym and have transformed it into a high-octane party zone called Magnum Club.

The queue stretched down the block at the opening party last week. Inside, VIP guests checked out the glass dance floors, laser lighting and free-flowing Moet. The bling factor spilled over into the rest rooms, replete with toilets covered in crystals.

Hosts Peter Yip Mow-lum, chairman of Bright Smart Group, Francis Kwok Sze-chi, the group's marketing director, and Rocky Wong, managing director of Magnum Club, invited special guests including actor Michael Tse Tin-wah, heiress Florinda Ho Chiu-wan and her boyfriend Joel Chan San-chung to take part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Also present were scores of other celebrities, including actor Wong He, yoga instructor Almen Wong Pui-ha, DJ Vincci Cheuk Wan-chi, director Vincent Kok Tak-chiu, models Jacqueline Chong, Ana Rivera, Cara Grogan, Alice B, Derek Ma, Yvette Yuen and Helen Rong.
