Hongkongers shivered through the coldest Lunar New Year in 16 years, with temperatures as low as 7.4 degrees Celsius in the urban areas on Wednesday and falling below 2 degrees at Ngong Ping on Lantau.

More than 800 holidaymakers were stranded mid-air in cable cars when the Ngong Ping 360 system came to a sudden halt. Passengers were stuck for up to 90minutes with the air temperature then standing at 3 degrees Celsius. It was the fourth technical fault in two months.

The Observatory said the cold snap will subside today. Temperatures will gradually rise to 13 degrees at the weekend.
