If you don't know about Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, like, where have you been? That's exactly what a publishing friend said to me when I mentioned enhanced e-books recently. Apparently the original Marcel the Shell with Shoes On has been the sort of viral hit in cyberspace that everyone pursues these days. An animated film about a shell with cute sneakers and a slightly eerie eye peering out where a snail should be, it has won almost 16 million viewings on YouTube, and the inevitable host of imitators and parodists. Now Penguin has produced an enhanced e-book of Marcel's adventures and philosophy. He doesn't fight orcs, wizards or even vampires; he muses on life, the universe, family and, above all, individuality. As behooves such a strange-looking creature, he mutters sweetly about what it means to be different and therefore yourself. For example, he sleeps on bread. Its interactive app enables a tour of his (wait for it) 'breadroom'. If you shake your iPad, he'll parachute or climb a sandal.
