208 Duecento Otto 
G/F, 208 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan. Tel: 2549 0208.  This former meat storage warehouse was transformed into a slice of New York cool by a team who were named the best young designers of 2004 by Wallpaper. Recommended: the extensive wine and cocktail list.  
4 Baby Buddha
18 Wo On Lane, Central. Tel: 2167 7244. Its tucked-away alley location and cool, minimalist d?cor make this the perfect spot for a quiet drink before hitting SoHo or Lan Kwai Fong. Recommended: Around the  World cocktail, a lethal combination of gin,  Scotch, brandy, rum and vodka masked  under fresh fruity flavours of orange,  lemon and pineapple. 
Berliner German Bar and Restaurant
Shop G01B, D Deck, Discovery Bay. Tel 2987 8203. This relaxed spot with a seaview  has a spacious outdoor seating area.  The large selection of German beers is joined on the menu by several cocktails and schnapps, all good matches with the hearty German fare. Recommended: Guinness-like Fishers Hell (half a litre, HK$60). 
 Brecht's
G/F 123 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2576 4785. This comfortable throwback to the 90s  serves good value premium beers and aged whiskies. Ignore the generic wines and head for the sometimes surprising HK$60 cocktails. Recommended: the Tagarimar (tequila, Cointreau, Galliano and fresh  lemon juice).  
California Vintage
77 Wyndham St, Central. Tel: 2525 0808. This  Wyndham Street wine bar has partnered with more than  20 Californian wineries, offering more than 80 tipples from around the Golden State.  Recommended: the pinot noir 2007 Fritz Reserve from Russian River (HK$140).  
Castro's
1/F, 16 Ashley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2957 8041. Don't dress up to visit this cigar smoke-laden Latin-vibe bar. Generous pours of powerful margaritas, daiquiris and mojitos, and one of the best pina coladas in town are the real draw. There's little point in drinking beer and wine when the cocktails are this good. Recommended: the ginger mojito, packed with freshly crushed mint and  ice (HK$65).  
The Chapel 
27 Yik Yam Street, Happy Valley. Tel: 2834 6565. Whether for a pre-race warm-up or post-win celebration, The Chapel's broad range of beers will satisfy anyone in Happy Valley. Recommended: the Chapel's curries  are  a great way to soak up the booze after  the races. 
The China Bar
G/F Ho Lee Commercial Building, 44 D'Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong. Tel: 2526 5992. Formerly Bar George, the cavernous space goes heavy on the red and dragons for its decorative motif but is comfortable and has a swell dance area. From a wide range of drinks, the cocktails were most eye-catching, especially a Passionate Kiwi containing crunchy, zesty green bell pepper segments. Recommended: the Merry Berry cocktail of Bombay Sapphire gin, fresh mint, raspberry, strawberry, cranberry juice and lime (HK$89).
Envie
G/F, 48 Wyndham St, Central. Tel: 2522 8318. A breezy, inviting space in neutral and beige tones that feels intimate, the bar has a wine-heavy, girly-cocktail dominated drinks list balanced by a few heavy duty drinks like the Contemporary Fashioned (a new twist on the Old Fashioned with 23-year-old Ron Zacapa rum). Recommended: Lambloch Estate's South Australian Shiraz (HK$52).
Flutes
27 Elgin Street, SoHo, Central. Tel: 2810  0005. What could beat an unpretentious atmosphere in a prominent SoHo spot? The extensive drinks list that includes many champagnes, wines and cocktails is a strong lure but the wines are generally a safer bet than the cocktails.  Recommended: the Domaine Magellan Merlot 2007 (HK$70).
Fringe Club 
2 Lower Albert Rd, Central. Tel: 2521 7251. The ground-floor bar is a hip hangout for the city's arty crowd, regularly offering great live music, while the roof bar is a bit rough around the edges but offers a casual alternative for those wanting to enjoy the nighttime sky. Recommended: the evening tapas menu offering chorizo, Thai fish cakes and  braised wings.  
Goldfinch Restaurant
13-15, G/F Lan Fong Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2577 7981. Made  famous by its role in a Wong Kar-wai film, it has been serving Hong Kong-style diner classics since 1962. It has kept  its charms and  provision of privacy in comfortable booths for all that time. Recommended: any of the classic cocktails at HK$39 each.  
Hard Rock Cafe 
LG/F LKF Tower, 55 D'Aguilar St, Lan Kwai Fong. Tel: 2111 3777. The Hard Rock Cafe   is lined with star-studded memorabilia, including a Gibson Les Paul guitar used by Slash of Guns N' Roses. Recommended: the Hurricane, with Bacardi Superior rum, Captain Morgan dark rum and Disaronno Amaretto plus grenadine, orange, mango and pineapple juice. 
Latitude 22o
G/F, 40 Staunton Street, Central. Tel: 2522 8329. Unstylish but somehow inviting and cozy in atmosphere, the bar offers a fairly standard mix of cocktails, beers and wines. The wine list has a few misses but some notable hits, such as a Louis Latour chardonnay and a McGuigan Shiraz. Beer drinkers will enjoy the Kronenbourg Blanc. Recommended: the Brazilian caipirinha, made with real cachaca (HK$58). 
Le Boudoir
B/F, 65 Wyndham St, Central Tel: 2530 3870. This atmospheric basement bar modelled on 19th-century Parisian salons is dark and lovely, with one of the best cocktail menus in town. Recommended: the Unconventional martini (HK$95), blending gin, lemon juice, mint and kaffir lime syrup.
4 Lei Dou
G/F 20-22 D'Aguilar St, Lan Kwai Fong, Central. Tel: 2525 6628. Yes it's in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong but still manages to feel like a hidden gem, with its low lighting and down-tempo jazz. Recommended: the espresso martini cannot be missed.   
Pastis
G/F 65 Wyndham Street, Cental. Tel: 2537 5702. Bars don't get much Frencher than this temple to anis-based drinks. As well as pastis, there is an interesting selection of French spirits. Recommended: the Pastis Henri Bardouin (HK$70).  
The Pawn 
62 Johnston Road, Wan Chai. Tel: 2866 3444. Relax at the beautifully restored historic building with natural light, low leather couches and a beautifully calm atmosphere. Recommended: Leffe Brune.  
Phonograph
2 Austin Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon. Tel: 2730 6622. Phonograph isn't a music venue but is one frequented by musicians. Staff don't mind plugging your iPod into the sound system while you sip a Yakult cocktail. Recommended: any of the Yakult cocktails.  
Sevva
25/F Prince's Building, 10 Chater Road, Central. Tel: 2537 1388. Indoor and (spacious) outdoor seating gives Sevva a nice edge, particularly given the incredible skyscraper views. Recommended: at Sevva it's the desserts which will steal your heart.  
 Vibes
Mira Hotel, 5/F, 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2368 1111. The secluded al fresco bar is very relaxed. A few twists on classic cocktails enliven a list that is heavy on whiskies.  There are also shisha and cigar menus. Recommended: the S&M (Scotch and mint) (HK$90).
Vida Rica
2/F Mandarin Oriental Macau, Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, Outer Harbour, Macau. Tel: (853) 8805 8928. A chic, sophisticated bar with views over the Macau Tower and Nam Van Lake, the bar serves manly cocktails designed by a New York mixologist.  Recommended: the Lagavulin 25 years cask strength single malt whisky (HK$490 per shot).  
Yumla 
Lower Basement, 79 Wyndham St, Central. Tel: 2147 2383. This popular bar attracts the music obsessives and is best known for its ear-bleeding sound system and top-quality DJs. Recommended: the mojito (HK$85) is one of the best in town.
