Praise and criticism for former police chief

Bo Xilai

Chongqing's municipal government has praised the city's former police chief, Wang Lijun, for his contribution to the fight against corruption, but also described him as 'short-tempered' and 'outspoken'.

Wang, 53, one of the city's seven deputy mayors and a close ally of city party boss Bo Xilai, has been stripped of his police chief duties and reassigned to a portfolio that includes education and the environment. The move is likely to fuel political jockeying in the run-up to the party congress this autumn.

The municipal government had given him an 800-word official assessment, according to the Qianjiang Evening News, part of the Hangzhou-based Zhejiang Daily Group - a mouthpiece of the Zhejiang Provincial Communist Party Committee.

'[Wang] has earned an excellent public reputation because of his ambition, responsibility and he is a man of principle,' the paper cited the assessment as saying. It added that Wang was disciplined and 'dared to tackle difficulties'. 'He is fair and just ... the imperfect thing is that sometimes he was short-tempered and didn't pay attention to the ways and means when criticising others.'

In the early 1990s, when Wang was police head in Tiefa, Liaoning, he reportedly scolded children of local officials who were involved in the sale of pirated pornographic videos. 'Don't expect any advantages from me ... your parents are nothing as they failed to inculcate you well, and now it's my turn to re-educate you because I am going to lock all of you up,' he was quoted as saying.
