Grub: Cheap and cheerful Italian, with a subtle hint of Japanese

Vibe: This is a bright, modern place that sits between Pacific Place and Wan Chai, but avoids their crowds. Mock floorboards and wood panelling give it a retro feel. Service is efficient.

Who to take: This is a good place to hang out and chat with friends.

What's hot: There are several branches of Italian Tomato around town. Some are called Cafe Jr, others are called Caffe Superiore. Superiore branches seem to have a larger pizza selection.

At Cafe Jr, spaghetti is the backbone of the menu. There are 10 sauces to choose from, including carbonara and Bolognese, although the latter is simply called a homemade meat sauce. For the more adventurous, there is a spicy smoked salmon and shrimp, or spaghetti with chicken in Japanese ginger sauce.

If you want to add a splash of colour to your table, try the bacon and spinach sauce. It's yummy, but the sauce could be a little thicker.

There are only two pizza choices here, a mixed vegetable with an egg on top and parma ham, both of which are thin crust. The ham was not bad but could have done with a little more sauce on the base, as it lacked the distinctive tomato tang.

Other non-spaghetti dishes include a seafood risotto and lasagne. If you are looking for something a little lighter, you could choose from hot dogs or ciabatta.

For those with a sweet tooth, there is a bewildering number of desserts on the cake menu. If the caramel banana tart is available, it will not disappoint.

What's not: All pasta prices on the menu are for spaghetti. You can order penne instead, but it costs HK$3 extra.

Cost: Pasta dishes are HK$40 to HK$60; pizzas HK$52 or HK$58; salads and other main dishes HK$45 to HK$55; hot dogs from HK$28; ciabattas from HK$38; desserts from HK$28; drinks from HK$20.
