Photos of suspect in rape case released

Police issued two photographs yesterday of a tall, thin Chinese man captured on surveillance camera and wanted in connection with a rape in Ap Lei Chau last month.

They also appealed to doctors or other medical workers who may have treated the suspect to contact police. Detectives believe the man injured himself as he jumped down a slope from the crime scene.

'We also want to talk to any driver of a taxi, or minibus who might have picked him up,' a spokesman said.

The suspect was filmed by CCTV near where a 21-year-old woman was dragged into the Ap Lei Chau Estate market off South Horizons Drive and raped at 3am on January 26.

The Cantonese-speaking man is about 1.82 metres tall with short hair and thought to be about 25.

The discovery of the CCTV images followed the release a sketch of the suspect late last month. 'We have received a number of calls from the public, but the information could not help us identity the suspect,' another officer said.

The attack occurred after the woman alighted from an N171 cross-harbour bus at the South Horizons Drive terminal in the early hours of the morning. Two minutes into her walk home, she was grabbed from behind and dragged into the market.

Detectives from Western District crime squad are investigating whether the suspect was a fellow bus passenger and had followed the victim after they got off.

Anyone with information can contact officers on 2859 4258 or 6202 3097.

Meanwhile, a manhunt continues for a fat South Asian suspect after a 15-year-old girl was raped in an alley behind a building in Wan Chai Road near the corner of Burrows Street at 6pm last Tuesday.

This man is about 1.67 metres tall, with long hair and thought to be aged between 30 and 40. Anyone with information should contact police on 2860 7833 or 9712 5841.

In the wake of the two rapes, police have stepped up patrols and urged the Link Management and owners' corporations to boost security.
