Alfie's by Kee
M18-19, M/F The Prince's Building, 10 Chater Road, Central. Tel: 2530 4422. With its dark wood, dimmed lights and leather lounges to sink into, Alfie's more than matches the Dunhill boys' club aesthetic. Recommended: Pimm's by Kee and the lemon grass martini.
2/F Amber Lodge, 23 Hollywood Rd. Tel: 2805 8388. Whisky has always transcended all notions of class and the people behind Angel's Share have rightly put this lovely drop back in its rightful place, with more than 100 varieties on offer. Recommended: the 20-year-old Macallan.
2/F Chater House, 8 Connaught Road, Central. Tel: 3583 2828. The 5,000-sq-ft terrace is the star of the show at the sister bar to Armani/Aqua restaurant; take in the views from cosy, candlelit seating. Not so impressed by the signature cocktails, the classy wine and spirits selection more than compensated. Recommended: Dom Perignon Oenotheque 1996 (HK$5,200 a bottle).
4 The Blck Brd
6/F and roof garden, No 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central. Tel: 2545 8555. With no DJs, no cocktails and no televisions, this bar has a unique focus: top-quality booze. And it's all served up in an elegant, almost industrial environment. Recommended: the 14-year-old Oban whisky (HK$138 a shot).
Biergarten German Bar and Restaurant
G/F, 5 Hanoi Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2721 2302. This convivial, raucous institution has an inviting if kitschy atmosphere. Stick to the German beers and usual cocktails as its dry riesling was off-putting. The sausages are pretty good. Recommended: the Thai Sunrise (HK$68), a twist on the tequila sunrise.
5/F Mody House, 30 Mody Road, TST. Tel: 2724 3828. A Tokyo-style drinking den favoured by Japanese customers, the bar is intimate and staffed by bartenders who can make cocktails to match your mood. Recommended: the 10-year original cask-aged Laphroaig (HK$80).
1/F Wo On Building, 8-12 Wo On Lane, Central. Tel: 2525 3599. An atmospheric, whimsical place with eccentric touches, the lounge's drinks list is extensive, with a champagne menu that stretches to a HK$17,800 bottle of Veuve Clicquot. Some cocktails hit the spot but others are a little sickly sweet. There are some interesting aged spirits. Recommended: the G6 (HK$90), a blend of raspberries, vodka, Chambord and pineapple pur?e.
Man Hing Lane (off Hollywood Road), Central. Tel: 2858 7071. A mellow haunt off Hollywood Road, with an impromptu alfresco area. A good range of beers and cocktails but leave the wines alone. A perfect place for casual drinks. Recommended: Amaretto sour.
The Excelsior, 281 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2837 6782. This unpretentious English-style sports bar with unobtrusive TVs is a great if noisy place for chatter, drinks and food. Recommended: the Peachy Ice tea is a potent trip round the top shelf of the bar.
77 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2520 5818. This slightly dark but definitely cosy nook moves from escape to midnight dance floor. Take advantage of excellent happy hour offers on champagne and cocktails such as the Penicillin (Scotch, lemon, honey and ginger). Recommended: Grimbergen draught (HK$65), an orangey, toffee-flavoured Belgian beer.
30/F iSquare, 63 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2487 3988. This impressively expansive space so rare with Kowloon bars takes advantage of the 30th-floor locale, turning the stunning harbour view into the bar's backdrop. The East-meets-West theme looks stylish instead of cheesy. Recommended: the more than 100 international wines or Chinese spirits such as Wuliangye.
27 Elgin Street, SoHo, Central. Tel: 2810
0005. What could beat an unpretentious atmosphere in a prominent SoHo spot? The extensive drinks list that includes many champagnes, wines and cocktails is a strong lure but the wines are generally a safer bet than the cocktails. Recommended: the Domaine Magellan Merlot 2007 (HK$70).
Garley Building, 45-53 Graham Street, Central. Tel: 2543 1941. The Globe is a smart English pub, with one of the widest and best selections of beers in Hong Kong, as well as excellent pub fare. Recommended: Typhoon T8, which is brewed on Lantau Island.
29/F QRE Plaza, 202 Queen's Road East, Wan Chai. Tel: 2907 0888. Habitat Lounge tries (too) hard to please but can be a romantic spot for a date, if you like old-school hip hop and carp projected on to the floor. Over 100 cocktails, many of them are fresh and fruity. Recommended: Richito (HK$70), made with light rum, lychee liqueur and Yakult.
Inn Side Out
Sunning Plaza, 10 Hysan Avenue, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2895 2900. The peanut husk-strewn floor and throngs of regulars make for a relaxed atmosphere in a crowded beer hall with an extensive outdoor seating area. Come for a wide range of great, relatively cheap beer and great drinking food to match. Recommended: Trappist Westmalle Tripel Belgian beer (HK$42).
4 Lei Dou
G/F, 20-22 D'Aguilar St, Lan Kwai Fong, Central. Tel: 2525 6628. Yes it's in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong but still manages to feel like a hidden gem, with its low lighting and down-tempo jazz. Recommended: the espresso martini cannot be missed.
The Lawn Bar
1/F The Upper House, Pacific Place, 88 Queensway, Admiralty. Tel: 3968 1107. The large, swanky outdoor space with plenty of furniture to sprawl on offers a wide variety of wines to choose from and a few of master mixologist Sam Jeveons' innovative cocktails. Recommended: the Elderflower Collins, made with elderflower syrup, Tanqueray gin, fresh lime juice, fresh grapes and soda (HK$110).
4 The Living Room
6/F W Hotel, Kowloon Station. Tel: 3717 2222. It's easy to kick back and feel right at home in this sprawling, beautifully designed bar complete with board games and bookcases - just help yourself. Recommended: the awesome lychee martinis.
118/F Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, International Commerce Centre, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon. Tel: 2263 2263. The highest bar in the world doesn't disappoint with its bird's-eye view of the city. Prices here are as steep as the venue, but then you're paying for that view. Recommended: wines are the main attraction, with a choice of several by the glass (HK$90-HK$170).
G/F, 65 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2537 5702. Bars don't get much more French than this temple to anise-based drinks. As well as pastis, there is an interesting selection of French spirits. Recommended: the Pastis Henri Bardouin (HK$70).
Salon de Ning
B/F The Peninsula, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2315 3355. Hidden away in the basement of the Pen is this glamorous slice of 1930s Shanghai, inspiring a feeling of intrigue and mystery. Recommended: the Manhattan (HK$115), using Jim Beam rather than rye whiskey.
18/F Sheraton Hong Kong Hotel & Towers, 20 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2369 1111. A welcome relief from the bustle below, the bar has a glamorous 1950s feel and is an elegant eyrie to recharge batteries - either through self-served wines from the Enomatc machine or with classic martinis. Recommended: the kiwi martini ((HK$95), a show-stopping blend of vodka, kiwi liqueur and kiwifruit syrup.
The Centrium, 60 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 3162 3710. This upbeat bar is packed at the weekends, when people come for dancing, cocktails and shooters. The bar handles the classics well and that makes for a full-on night out. Recommended: the Mud Slide, a HK$80 mix of vodka, Kaolua, Baileys and vanilla ice cream.
ToTT's and Roof Terrace
34/F The Excelsior Hotel, 281 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2837 6786. A glamorous hotel rooftop bar as suitable for business entertaining as for romantic soirees. ToTT's has an extensive list of cocktails and wines. The happy hour is good value. Recommended: Moonlight lychee Blossom, a mix of vodka, elderflower, lemon and champagne (HK$98).
