Hold off on lawmakers' pay rise, Emily Lau says

Lawmakers may put on hold a proposal to double their pay after a public outcry. In a letter to all 60 noting that reaction, Emily Lau Wai-hing, the chairwoman of the Legislative Council subcommittee on members' remuneration, last night said: 'Given the lack of consensus among lawmakers, I will propose ... not to submit a detailed proposal ... for the time being.' People Power's Wong Yuk-man is among those against raising his and colleagues' pay from HK$73,150 to HK$141,000 a month, arguing it is inappropriate given how many people missed out on budget handouts. Some lawmakers have said pay should be pegged to members' performance. Gary Cheung
