Hong Kong's Lee Wai-sze struck gold again at the Asian Championships yesterday, winning the women's sprint in Kuala Lumpur.
The 25-year-old (pictured) had little difficulty defeating Malaysia's Fatehah Mustapa 2-0 in the best-of-three round final, one day after she won gold in the 500-metre time trial.
With the absence of mainlanders Guo Shuang, the 2008 Olympic bronze medallist, and Lin Junhong, to whom Lee lost in the semi-finals at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, the Hong Kong rider proved superior in the event in which she is chasing a berth for the London Olympics.
'Although China did not send their two best riders, Lee still proved she is a classy sprinter and has progressed a lot from the Guangzhou Games two years ago,' said Hong Kong team manager Hung Chung-yam. 'She is now a more mature rider with a strong determination to win.'
Lee leaves for London on Monday and next week's World Cup classic, another important qualification round towards the Olympic Games.
While Guo and Lee are the two favourites to represent Asia in the sprint at the London Games, Lee faces a fight with Mustapa for a place in the keirin. Guo should have little problem winning a place in both events.
