Graduates need better work skills
I felt upset when I read about the lack of university graduates' job skills. It is disappointing that new graduates often lack enthusiasm, initiative and drive.
This shows the failure of university education, which imparts basic knowledge but fails to help students develop a good attitude towards their work and future.
It also fails to help students acquire business and common sense, as well as enhance their management and problem-solving skills.
I agree that education reforms are necessary. Curricula should be designed to build up students' good attitude. They should be given more chances to experience real-life work situations so they can learn to deal with challenges.
For instance, universities can make it compulsory for students to have internships in a company for a year.
Graduates are the future of Hong Kong. They should be well-trained to enhance Hong Kong's competitiveness.

Thank you for your letter, Karen. Some people think they can succeed on their wits alone, following in the footsteps of school dropouts like Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.
But the Zuckerbergs of the world are a rarity. The chances of anyone else being that successful are minimal.
The rest of us may need to make compromises in the work we do, whether we like it or not. That doesn't mean hard work won't lead to success. If you show dedication and commitment to your job, you will be rewarded.
