A ring of the ridiculous

Robin Parke

THE immediate reaction of those who read of a possible fight between former heavyweight champions Evander Holyfield and Mike Weaver here in February must have been: you've got to be kidding. Few sporting disasters in recent years have been of the inglorious magnitude of High Noon in Hong Kong.

Yet, here we are talking of a possible bout six week after the last dispirited boxer trooped out of Kai Tak. There is plenty of idle talk in sport, but Hong Kong is apparently being considered as a venue and, I suppose, we should be grateful. If this does get anywhere past the talking stage, let us hope that serious lessons have been learned from the High Noon fiasco. For a start, the Hong Kong Stadium is not needed. The Hong Kong Coliseum is a much more suitable venue.

And somebody should have a word with them about ticket prices. We're only looking for a couple of hours entertainment, not trying to buy a piece of Holyfield's contract.
