At her quarterly showcase in Hong Kong, designer Nicole Moja unveiled her latest spring-summer collections of semi-precious, gold and silver jewellery on the theme In Love with Blue, to indicate her recent obsession with all stones of that hue.

'It's funny because I wasn't that partial to that colour before; this inspiration really came out of the blue - pun noted,' Moja said at yesterday's event at Azure in Central.

Aside from the eye-catching pieces featuring lapis lazuli, blue topaz, sapphires and azurite, the jeweller was also excited about pieces from a recent collaboration with a young Balinese craftsman working in traditional metal-craft on rings, bracelets and earrings, which she believes will appeal to her younger fans. Moja's philosophy of bypassing the middleman means she has a close relationship with her sources for material on the one hand, and a close-knit client base on the other.

The designer has called Bali home for two decades. It is where she often partners directly with mines on the excavation of raw crystals and works with local talent in production.

'I think my clients appreciate that I evolve all the time, which happens naturally when you are doing something you really like,' Moja said. 'I work intuitively, and I see my creative process almost like an upward spiral. The only thing that doesn't change is my love of semi-precious stones - for their uniqueness, endless colour and textures.'

Moja's second and last showcase this season is next Thursday, from 1pm to 7.30pm in the Bloom Room at Azure.
