Sony Vaio EJ35

Sony

With the first netbooks, we put up with less processing power, less memory, and small displays because it meant small, cheap computers that were portable.

Now you don't have to make compromises with Sony's new Vaio EJ35. While priced like a netbook, the EJ35 comes with a massive 17.3-inch high definition (1600 x 900 pixels) LED display, a speedy Intel Core i5 processor at 2.5GHz running Windows 7, 4GB of RAM and a huge 500GB hard disk drive.

The gigantic screen also means that there's plenty of space to incorporate extras, such as the DVD Super Multi DL drive, the dedicated Nvidia graphics card, four USB 2.0 slots, VGA and HDMI output ports, and a SD card reader.

In fact, the EJ35 is so big that its keyboard comes complete with the number pad that is typically only available on desktop keyboards.

Obviously, with size comes weight, making the EJ35 a hefty 3.1kg. That makes it one of the heaviest laptops on the market today, and even heavier than the average newborn baby in Japan, which comes in at just 3kg.

Then again, it is probably not intended for lugging around from coffee shop to coffee shop. With its large display, the EJ35 is clearly designed as a desktop replacement, a computer that is flexible enough to fit nicely on your desk while you write your essay, or next to your bed, when you want to listen to music.

The Sony Vaio EJ35 is listed at HK$6,480.

Pros: 17.3-inch HD display, fast processor, 500GB hard disk, integrated DVD

Cons: weighs as much as a newborn baby - you'll need a big bag.
