Suspect in rape case taken to the scene

The man accused of raping a 21-year-old woman in Ap Lei Chau last month was taken by police to the crime scene yesterday.

The 28-year-old suspect, who has the surname Cheung, was later charged with one count of rape and was expected to appear in Eastern Court today.

He was arrested last Friday evening at a shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui after an almost month-long manhunt by police who had released a sketch and surveillance camera images of the suspect.

His head covered with a hood and hands chained, the suspect was yesterday morning escorted by dozens of detectives and officers from the Police Tactical Unit to the scene of the alleged sexual assault that took place at 3am on January 26.

The victim was allegedly grabbed from behind soon after getting off a N171 cross-harbour bus at the South Horizons Drive bus terminal. She was allegedly dragged into the Ap Lei Chau Estate wet market and raped.

Yesterday's tour of the alleged crime scene and the suspect's escape route began about 8.30am at the bus terminal. He was then led about 100 metres to the wet market before being taken to a slope off the nearby South Horizons private housing estate.

The visit took about one hour and was recorded on video. The suspect was then taken back to a police station for further questioning.

Police are still investigating a separate sexual assault that occurred five days after the alleged Ap Lei Chau Estate rape.

In the second attack, a 15-year-old girl was raped in an alley behind a building on Wan Chai Road at 6pm on January 31.

Police are looking for a South Asian man, described as being fat with long hair. He is about 1.67 metres tall, and thought to be aged between 30 and 40.
