Kids' fashion puts stylish foot forward

The gloomy weather did little to dampen an afternoon of family fun at the Mama Kid shop in Stanley. Members of the fashion set showed up with their stylish toddlers on Saturday for a preview of Vancouver-based shoemaker Native Kid's spring-summer collection. The brand is available exclusively at Mama Kid in Hong Kong.

While the grown-ups sipped champagne, the little ones tucked into a variety of sweet treats.

Mama Kid's owner, former model-actress Valerie Chow Kar-ling, said Native Kid's shoes were all she could want for her own baby. 'I always look for something comfortable for my kid. They have to give children their unique personality and allow them to play comfortably,' she said.

The candy-coloured, rubber sneakers, launched in 2009, have been a hit with celebrity parents worldwide, including Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and the Obamas.

'They are perfect for the hot and humid summer in Hong Kong,' Chow said.

Following the opening of her first children's fashion boutique in Central in 2010, Chow opened her Stanley shop in December to meet the growing demand for more stylish children's wear.

'Competition is good,' she said, acknowledging that other brands were jumping on the children's wear bandwagon. 'It makes you become more focused and work harder. I think for the new season, the trend will be an Hawaiian theme, tropical prints and the colour yellow.'
