Telephone number

BLOCKS of numbers may be allocated to the new telephone companies from July 1 with possible 'golden' numbers withheld if no decision on how to handle them has been made by then, the telecom watchdog says.

But the three new fixed-line operators - Hutchison Telecommunications, New T & T and New World Development - say such a plan is impractical.

With the addition of a '2' to the front of every Hongkong Telecom number from January 1 and new blocks, probably starting with 3, to be allocated to the new operators, a whole host of new lucky numbers will be made available.

The Office of the Telecommunications Authority asked the operators last month to give it their views on what these numbers are, whether they should be allocated as special numbers and, if so, how it should be done.
