The short-term accommodations in Manila's Ortigas Center district include all the usual trappings of business hotels. But there are few notable exceptions, one of them being Discovery Suites, a luxurious serviced residence aimed at corporate clients.

The lodgings on offer include four floors - soon to be expanded to five - of refurbished suites, with fully-furnished kitchens, dining and reception areas, and even an on-demand valet service.

All suites feature the standard business-related facilities, such as free broadband access, with a few extra perks, including express check-in and check-out assistance, one-hour complimentary use of the boardroom, and a dedicated executive lounge.

'We offer serviced apartments with hotel services catering mainly to corporate and business clients,' says Gemma Batoon, group director for marketing communications at Discovery Group, the parent firm.

The 11 meeting and function rooms on site range from 172 to 2,152 square feet. Each offers audiovisual equipment and teleconferencing facilities, as well as complimentary business functions such as 24-hour secretarial and translation services.

The hotel is at the heart of Ortigas Center - one of Manila's premiere business hubs - and is less than an hour away from the domestic and international airports, and a 10-minute walk from a bus terminus and a Light Rail Transit station.

High-end shopping malls and convention and exhibition venues, such as the Mega Trade Hall, are just across the street, as are a host of food and beverage outlets.

WineBar 1771 is among the newer of these outlets. The 1,100 sq ft 'resto-bar' is immensely popular for its steaks, burgers and oysters, making it a choice venue to impress clients. As per its name, the restaurant also boasts an impressive wine list and offers a wide selection of imported beers, sak? sochu and liquor.

The restaurant, which can comfortably seat up to 100, can be booked for corporate occasions. But for smaller gatherings, the four private rooms, which include WiFi access and seating for up to six, are more than adequate.
