MY thanks to S. Mann (South China Morning Post, December 7) for enlightening me on the problem of cockroaches on the No.1 minibus.

I had long wondered at the mentality of the drivers in the ranks of minibuses parked alongside HMS Tamar with engines running as they idly sat in their cabs playing with the accelerator, sending clouds of diesel fumes over passengers and pedestrians alike. All is now clear.

They are not mindlessly polluting the environment but are public-spirited individuals attempting to eliminate the cockroaches in their respective vehicles by means of carbon monoxide poisoning.

I don't know what effect it is having on the cockroaches, but it is beginning to work on the passengers. I note there are lots of Mercedes parked outside City Hall which likewise must be suffering cockroach infestation.
