Suspects in mall kidnap case 'misunderstood'
An alleged kidnapping attempt by two suspects at a shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui has been ruled a 'misunderstanding' by police.
Officers said they identified the two men, believed to be mainlanders, who were accused in Facebook posts of trying to abduct a girl at a Jumpy Gym in Harbour City on Wednesday while her mother was away.
But authorities found nothing suspicious. 'After a probe, we believe the incident does not involve any criminal elements and it is just a matter of misunderstanding,' a police spokesman said yesterday morning, without giving further details.
Pictures of the two men had been uploaded on Facebook by a concerned mother at the mall, and further postings on the site claimed they attempted to take the girl.
The police launched an investigation following media reports about the incident. There have been a number of posts on Facebook about alleged child abduction attempts in Tai Wai, Tuen Mun, Mong Kok and in Disneyland.
Police also ruled not suspicious the case of a 10-year-old boy who was found at Lo Wu border checkpoint last night. He had been reported missing earlier yesterday by his father.
The boy, Chan Chi-cheuk, left his Pok Fu Lam home at about 8am. His father sought police help, and a missing person appeal was issued at around 6.30pm. Officers said they believed there were no suspicious circumstances in the case.
