Lucky Nine to wear shades in desert

Trainer Caspar Fownes may add blinkers to fine tune his Hong Kong Sprint winner Lucky Nine for the US$2 million Golden Shaheen in Dubai on March 30.

Fownes confirmed yesterday his dual Group One winner will be one of the strong Hong Kong contingent headed for World Cup night, along with Dubai Duty Free runners Ambitious Dragon, California Memory and Xtension, and Al Quoz Sprint aspirants Joy And Fun and Eagle Regiment.

Trainer Ricky Yiu Poon-fai was still waiting yesterday to hear if Dynamic Blitz would get a late call-up for the Golden Shaheen.

Fownes (pictured) knows the Golden Shaheen is going to be a tough task, with last year's winner Rocket Man and also Australia's brilliant three-year-old Sepoy targeting the sprint on Tapeta, and Krypton Factor was an impressive winner in the traditional lead-up event, the Group Three Mahab Al Shimaal.

'It's a tough race - that winner on Saturday night there, Krypton Factor, was very good after having a tough trip in the race,' Fownes said, but he knows Lucky Nine is well up to the company and hopes a tweaking of the gelding's gear may make a difference. 'He's coming back from 1,400m to 1,200m, so I might look at blinkers for him. I'll throw them on him next Monday in a jump-out from the gates with Brett Prebble aboard and see what Brett thinks about using them at Meydan. It might just have him that little bit sharper and concentrating better over the shorter trip.'

Hong Kong's Dubai runners will leave on two flights, scheduled for the 22nd and 24th of this month.
