Maritime

Nautical is back this spring, but not in the way you'd expect. Instead of Breton tops and sailor trousers, designers are diving deep into the ocean for a new wave of inspiration. Sea creatures such as starfish are splattered on Versace's sporty dresses, while Mary Katrantzou features digital prints of colourful underwater seascapes teeming with tropical fish. Elsewhere the interpretation isn't as literal, as designers reference the deep blue sea in their choice of colour palette or silhouettes. Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen has opted for ruffled metallic fabrics that mimic waves while Chanel's suits shimmer with sequins reminiscent of mother-of-pearl, and come with matching pearl belts. More modern is Peter Pilotto's scuba suit-inspired silhouette. The easiest way to work this trend is with accessories, whether it's a coral necklace or shell clutch.

Pick jewellery inspired by under-the-water materials such as shells or coral. McQueen's skull pendant (from On Pedder, HK$3,900) features the brand's signature skull morphed with a starfish

Yves Saint Laurent's rubber thong sandals with starfish decoration (HK$1,990) are great for the beach

For the evening, try Charlotte Olympia's She Sells Sea Shells platforms (right, from On Pedder, HK$10,800) decorated with pearls, shells and other ocean treasures. For everyday opt for Versace's tote bag (below, HK$14,500) decorated with a shell print
