What I'm reading: Gelassenheit by Martin Heidegger, probably the most poetic yet controversial philosopher of the 20th century. He cuts straight to the heart of philosophy with the question: what is thinking? He explores the thought of early Greek thinkers from a pre-metaphysical standpoint.
What I'm listening to: a 2009 recording featuring the Los Angeles Orchestra performing Brazilian composer Arthur Verocai's self-titled album. The album came out in 1972 at the height of the Brazilian dictatorship and was a commercial failure then. It was re-released in 2003 and has since become an influential record for contemporary musicians across genres.
What I'm watching: Hoop Dreams, a 1994 documentary directed by Steve James. It follows the story of two African-American high school students who struggle to become college basketball players on the road to going professional. It's a brilliant, true-life tale of the American Dream told from a different context and point of view.
