The point is to keep on walking

One Saturday I went hiking with my friend, Amy. We wanted to start from Central and go up to the Peak. We didn't bring a map, and we didn't know the way. So we just decided to follow the tram track. Soon we realised we had picked a really difficult path. Though we were exhausted, we didn't give up. We kept walking and walking. Finally, we arrived at The Peak.

You may think that Amy and I were silly for not taking a mini-bus or taxi when we realised we had a tough climb ahead of us. But I look at it differently. Life is just like hiking. There are many challenges and difficulties along the way. We face a lot of crossroads and have to choose the right one.

Sometimes we might choose a wrong turn. But if we keep focusing on our goal and don't give up, we'll arrive at our destination in the end.

Thank you for your letter, Lorraine. Your attitude to your recent hike is very refreshing - sometimes we can't plan life down to the smallest detail. Sometimes we have to go with the flow, and see where the wind carries us.

There is a time and place for planning - but there is a lot of room in life for leaving things to chance, and just seeing where life takes you.

One note, though: when you're going hiking off the beaten track - not on a well-worn path such as the one from Central to The Peak - make sure you properly map out your route, and let people know where you are going. Make sure your mobile phone is fully charged, and bring a first-aid kit, plenty of water and some high-energy snacks. You don't want to be one of the many people who have to call for rescue.
