Shek strikes gold in US on road to Olympic Games

Leading Hong Kong gymnasts Shek Wai-hung and Angel Wong Hiu-ying both enjoyed major success ahead of their maiden Olympic campaign by winning medals at the Pacific Rim Championships in Everett, in the US state of Washington, on the weekend.

Shek won gold in the vault with a score of 15.687 points, beating American Sam Mikulak, who scored 15.562. Canada's Scott Morgan was third.

In the women's vault, Wong took silver with a score of 13.875 behind Japan's Wakiko Ryu, who earned 14.062 points. Another Japanese gymnast, Risa Konishi, secured bronze.

Coach Poon King-hung was impressed by Shek's result, saying the gymnast had maintained a consistently high standard throughout the competition.

'Shek has done exceptionally well, but we still need to increase the difficulties of his manoeuvres if he wants to challenge for a medal at the Olympic Games this summer,' Poon said.
