From March 6 to 8, 1.57 million students around the world logged onto the internet for something phenomenal - the World Education Games.

The annual three-day event, organised by a team from education provider 3P Learning, featured World Spelling Day, World Maths Day and World Science Day. The events were free for students and schools to enter.

World Maths Day recorded the biggest-ever number of participants this year, upholding its Guinness World Record for the largest online mathematics competition in the world.

Thousands of Hong Kong students took part - as it turns out, our city is home to many clear-minded Mathletes and knowledgeable wordsmiths. Sachin Mital, 11, from Canadian International School, is one of them.

Sachin's brilliant achievement was to tackle 110 questions in 60 seconds on World Maths Day. He came first in the 11-13 year-old category in Hong Kong, and seventh worldwide. 'Having achieved this, I am more motivated to get higher grades next year,' he said.

Sachin's secret to winning is his daily 45-minute practice on the Mathletics website, powered by 3P Learning. He also spent time memorising the keypad so that he could type in answers quicker.

Aaron Tang, a Year 12 student from Sha Tin College, also performed well in the maths competition, coming 12th worldwide in the 14-18 category. He says the global experience was thrilling. 'During the game, I saw many students in Malaysia were doing really well,' he says. 'So I felt pushed to do better as well.'
