Jyukaku Super Mineral Water 
Extremely soft, light and pleasingly smooth, probably owing to its alkalinity (a pH of nine). It is low in minerals, and has no obvious flavour. As a consequence, this brand might seem a bit dull, especially at room temperature. It may work well for brewing coffee or tea, but the high price (this was the most expensive of the five tested) makes it one strictly for aficionados.

Volvic Natural Mineral Water 
Named after the town in Auvergne, central France, a volcanic region where the water is sourced, this goes down incredibly well. Even without refrigeration, it is refreshing, with a neutral flavour. With relatively low amounts of calcium and a neutral pH (seven), it is fairly soft and easy to drink. The price makes it even more attractive.

Acqua Panna 
This Tuscan water is neither too soft nor too hard; it flows with a finesse on the palate, with a tiny twang of minerals in the finish, which gives it a slight crispness. It is slightly alkaline, but this was virtually undetectable. It was refreshing even at room temperature and, overall, a very balanced water, with something for everyone.

Evian Natural Mineral Water 
The name Evian is synonymous with premium H2O. With its extreme minerality and hard-hitting crispness, it's not hard to understand why. On the flip side, the minerals give it a roughness and rather strong metallic aftertaste, which makes it unsuitable for tea or anything with delicate flavours. It's also better value in larger bottles.

Hildon Natural Mineral Water 
This English water is relatively soft and pleasant to drink. It tastes as neutral and clean as they come, with a slight aftertaste of minerals giving it a great lively finish. It's a good all-rounder, great for drinking on its own or mixed, as it doesn't affect other flavours. However, this quality and versatility means it does not come cheap.
