Lionel Messi

The 24-year-old Argentinian striker became Barcelona's highest goalscorer of all time with a hat-trick in a 5-3 win against Granada that lifted his team within five points of Real Madrid atop Spanish soccer's La Liga. Argentinian and Spanish media hailed Messi (left) as 'a living legend' as his tally rose to 234 goals for the club to overtake Cesar Rodriguez as its all-time top scorer. He topped the league with 34 goals. 'Messi is defining an era,' Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes said. 'He is the best.'

Judith Tebbutt

The British hostage captured in Kenya over six months ago by gunmen who killed her husband was released in central Somalia and flown out to Nairobi. Tebbutt, 57, was taken in September from a remote beach resort near the Kenyan-Somali border by armed men who shot her husband David. She was freed in the Addado region, 50 kilometres from the Ethiopian border. An official with the Somali militia Ahlu Sunnah Wal Jama said a ransom was paid to pirates for Tebbutt's release. No figure was given.

Deanie Ip Tak-han

The local film veteran took the best actress prize at the Asian Film Awards for her turn as an ageing maid in A Simple Life. Two Hong Kong-mainland productions won five other awards at the glitzy event. The 64-year-old (right) had retired until director Ann Hui On-wah offered her the role she couldn't refuse. Her performance as 'Sister Peach' also earned her best actress at both the Venice Film Festival and Taiwan's Golden Horse Awards.
