Backmarker relishes a solid tempo to nail his opposition

Francis Lui Kin-wai sensed the track was favouring frontrunners, but his fears were allayed when backmarker, The Only Kid, swooped from the tail for Gerald Mosse to score in a Class Four. 'Before the race I discussed with Gerald that it looked suited to the leaders,' he said. 'But our horse can't be ridden like that and he had drawn wide, so we had no choice than to go back.' A solid-enough tempo gave The Only Kid a chance, with the horse coming off a lay-off because of internal issues, his last run an eighth on January 15. Mosse agreed the horse was best ridden dead cold. 'Today he had plenty of time to catch his rhythm and he gave me a great kick in the straight,' he said.
