208 Duecento Otto 

G/F, 208 Hollywood Road, Sheung Wan. Tel: 2549 0208. One of the most talked-about new additions to the Hollywood Road nightlife scene is a former meat storage warehouse transformed into a slice of New York cool. Recommended: the extensive wine and cocktail list.

Aqua Spirit

29-30/F, 1 Peking Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 3427 2288. Too many turn their noses up at Kowloon, but there's one thing you need to come here for: an unmatched view of Hong Kong. Recommended: the signature Aquatini is the icing on the cake while enjoying the famous view.

The Blck Brd

6/F and roof garden, No 8 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central. Tel: 2545 8555. With no DJs, no cocktails and no televisions, this bar has a unique focus: top-quality booze served up in an almost industrial environment. Recommended: the 14-year-old Oban whisky (HK$138 a shot), along with the Ardbeg, Talisker and Glenmorangie (all HK$88 a shot). 

Brecht's

G/F 123 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2576 4785. This comfortable throwback to the '90s doesn't have much connection with the playwright but serves good value premium beers and aged whiskies. Recommended: the Tagarimar (tequila, Cointreau, Galliano and fresh lemon juice).

Butler

5/F Mody House, 30 Mody Road, TST. Tel: 2724 3828. A Tokyo-style drinking den favoured by Japanese customers, the bar is intimate and staffed by bartenders who can make cocktails that match your mood. Recommended: the 10-year original cask-aged Laphroaig (HK$80).

Club @28

28/F, Crowne Plaza Hotel, 8 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 3980 3300. The vibe: this rooftop bar is sleek, stylish and far from understated. Inside it's bright and glitzy, with a circular bar and glass windows on either side, one of which leads to the venue's real gem - a wood-decked terrace. Recommended: the J-Cube cocktail, made with vodka and crushed strawberries. 

Dharma Den

2/F The Workstation, 43 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central. Tel: 9813 1579. The curious inclusion of a pole-dancing area and a great terrace with outdoor grill in a Tibetan themed bar makes up for a lacklustre drinks list. Recommended: the 12-year-old Glenfiddich (HK$75).

Dragon-I 

UG/F The Centrium, 60 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 3110 1222. Dragon-i has the strongest reputation for late-night clubbing and as a place to see and be seen. Recommended: any cocktail or enjoy a bottle of 10-year-old Chinese rice wine, to see if it's any better than the rest.

Envie

G/F, 48 Wyndham St, Central. Tel: 2522 8318. A breezy, inviting space in neutral and beige tones that feels intimate. The bar has a wine-heavy, girly cocktail-dominated drinks list balanced by a few heavy-duty drinks like the Contemporary Fashioned (a new twist on the Old Fashioned with 23-year-old Ron Zacapa rum). Recommended: Lambloch Estate's South Australian Shiraz (HK$52).

Eyebar

30/F iSquare, 63 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2487 3988. This impressively expansive space so rare with Kowloon bars takes advantage of the 30th-floor locale, turning the stunning harbour view into the bar's backdrop. The East-meets-West theme look stylish instead of cheesy. Recommended: the Chinese spirits such as Wuliangye.

Flutes

27 Elgin Street, SoHo, Central. Tel: 2810 0005. What could beat an unpretentious atmosphere in a prominent SoHo spot? The extensive drinks list that includes many champagnes, wines and cocktails is a strong lure but the wines are generally a safer bet than the cocktails. Recommended: the Domaine Magellan Merlot 2007 (HK$70).

Hive 101

Shop A, 101/F International Commerce Centre, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon. Tel: 2972 2666. This quiet bar with glorious views is a tranquil spot for conversation. Recommended: the blend of ice wine, Yoichi whisky, cranberry juice and lemon called a Maple Route.

Lei Dou

G/F 20-22 D'Aguilar St, Lan Kwai Fong, Central. Tel: 2525 6628. Yes it's in the middle of Lan Kwai Fong but still manages to feel like a hidden gem. Recommended: the espresso martini cannot be missed.

Le Tambour

52A Peel Street Central. Tel: 3114 6320. French decor, wine and patrons make for a casual spot for wine lovers, that also occasionally hosts jazz nights. Recommended: from a boutique winery list, we liked sweet gewurtztraminer from Vallee Noble Seppi Landmann (HK$70). 

Lily

6/F LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham St, Central. Tel: 2810 6166. Modelled after the salons and supper clubs that flourished at the turn of the century, Recommended: the Elderflower Paloma, combining tequila, lime, grapefruit and soda water infused with elderflower.

Psychic Jack

1/F, 30-32 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2868 6102. This deliciously decadent addition to the Wyndham Street scene is all comfortable relaxed hues, while the Central nightlife bursts into life around you. Recommended: the lemon drops (HK$76) and the Long Beach Iced Tea (HK$102). 

Salon de Ning

B/F The Peninsula, Salisbury Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2315 3355. Hidden away in the basement of the Peninsula is this glamorous slice of 1930s Shanghai, inspiring a feeling of intrigue and mystery. Recommended: the Manhattan (HK$115), using Jim Beam rather than rye whiskey.

Solas

The Centrium, 60 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 3162 3710. This upbeat bar is packed at the weekends, when people come for dancing, cocktails and shooters. Recommended: the Mud Slide, a HK$80 mix of vodka, Kahlua, Baileys and vanilla ice cream.

Tazmania Ballroom

1/F LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2801 5009. The coolest, sleekest pool hall in Hong Kong, this lounge bar is straight out of Hoxton. Recommended: the 'F*** Me Up', a cocktail with a serious alcohol kick, including amaretto, Malibu and vodka.

Tott's and Roof Terrace

34/F The Excelsior Hotel, 281 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2837 6786. A glamorous hotel rooftop bar as suitable for business entertaining as for romantic soirees. An extensive drinks list that's heavy on cocktails and wines. Recommended: moonlight lychee blossom, a mix of vodka, elderflower, lemon and champagne (HK$98).

Vibes

5/F Mira Hotel, 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2368 1111. The secluded alfresco bar is very relaxed. A few twists on classic cocktails enliven a list that is heavy on whiskies but also includes premium vodkas and rums. Recommended: the S&M (Scotch and mint, HK$90).

Vida Rica

2/F Mandarin Oriental Macau, Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, Outer Harbour, Macau. Tel: (853) 8805 8928. A chic, sophisticated bar with views over the Macau Tower and Nam Van Lake.  Recommended: the Lagavulin 25 years cask strength single malt whisky (HK$490 per shot).

Volume Beat

LG/F, 62 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan. Tel: 2857 7683. A pink nightclub with a loyal following for its eclectic music. Stiff cocktails are a strong feature. Recommended: Strawberry Mini Boom champagne cocktail (HK$120).

W52

G/F, 52 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 6768 5252. Our favourite bar on Wyndham Street is as chic and sophisticated as ever; stick to spirits and cocktails.  Recommended: the W Spice, a buttery concoction of butterscotch schnapps, vanilla vodka, pineapple juice and ground black pepper (HK$98).

Yumla

Lower Basement, 79 Wyndham St, Central. Tel: 2147 2383. This popular bar attracts the music obsessives and is best known for its ear-bleeding sound system and top-quality DJs. Recommended: the mojito (HK$85) is one of the best in town.
