Matsushita to process cargo via Rotterdam
LEADING Japanese electronics goods manufacturer Matsushita has signed a long-term contract with Oceanlink to distribute all its less than container-load (LCL) cargo to countries throughout Europe via the port of Rotterdam.
Previously, the cargo was moved through Hamburg and Rotterdam.
Matsushita is well-known for brands such as Panasonic, National and Technics.
David Grant, European marketing director at P&O Containers, said: 'Until recently, Matsushita had used two freight forwarding companies in Europe, Ocean_link in Rotterdam and a competitor in Hamburg.
'Matsushita preferred to concentrate all its LCL shipments through one port of entry to reduce logistical costs and transit times.' He said Oceanlink had won the contract based on the distribution services it offered, and that ships on its Far East-Europe service called at Rotterdam earlier than Hamburg.
The time saved could be used to compensate for the longer transport times to the European hinterland, Mr Grant said.
Oceanlink's 8,000 square metre facility at Ridderkerk operates as a transit distribution centre.
