1950s RETRO

While most designers, inspired by the hit television series Downton Abbey, have embraced the 1920s, spring-summer 2012 also sees the return of Happy Days as the 1950s take to the catwalks. Leading the pack is Miuccia Prada, whose collection includes retro car-print dresses and flame shoes. Raf Simons at Jil Sander (pictured) opts for a more modern interpretation, which includes '50s couture shapes covered in tartan or paisley. It's all about recreating the feminine hourglass silhouettes, so choose full skirts and dresses, such as the pleated variety from Chloe. For a sexier look, try a Marilyn Monroe-style high-waisted pencil skirt matched with a button-down blouse. Cute prints or pastel colours such as blue and yellow add a feminine touch.

Cat's eye-shaped sunglasses - popularised by '50s style icons such as Audrey Hepburn - work best in dark colours such as these burgundy beauties (HK$3,750) from Celine

Go for a boxy handbag with clean lines and minimal hardware - the new Pyramide bag (starting from HK$24,950) from Prada is perfect and comes in various colours

Ankle strap shoes or T-bar sandals add to the retro vibe. We like this black and white tuxedo style (HK$6,750) with a bow detail at the ankles by Gianvito Rossi
