We need to save more energy

I read about a new solar power station in Spain that can provide electricity 24 hours a day. It works day and night. It is the first solar power station that can do this.

In addition, the station generates far more electricity than earlier models. Yet because of our great electricity needs, even thousands of such stations would not be enough.

What we have to do is cut back on our electricity needs. We should save energy so that we don't need so much of it in the first place.

The world is facing serious energy problems. You can start by turning off lights and electrical appliances you do not use. You should also make sure that you buy energy-saving lightbulbs and appliances.

From the Editor

Thank you for your letter, Cindy. The possibilities offered by renewable energy are reassuring. Using the Earth's natural mechanisms to create power reduces damage to the planet.

But setting up these technologies takes a huge amount of time, money and research. The 'return' on this investment may take years, or even decades. But that's no reason for us not to start preparing for greener power.

We have so many devices these days, few of which are essential. We could all cut down on the time we spend watching TV, surfing the internet or playing on our smartphones.

If the idea of a dark future isn't enough to make you cut down, think about the day you leave your parents' home and start paying your own bills. Start saving energy now; it will make your future brighter in more ways than one.
