Mid-life crisis prompts Sunny reunion
Directed by Kang Hyeong-cheol, the Korean dramedy Sunny tells the story of seven middle-aged women as they reunite after 25 years to relive their memorable high school years.
Middle-aged housewife Na-mi (played by Yoo Ho-jeong; teen version by Shim Eun-kyung) lives a comfortable life with her husband and daughter. But beneath the luxury and wealth she feels alone and unhappy.
When she asks her husband and daughter to visit her mother in hospital, they both refuse: the former simply gives her money to buy luxury goods while the latter shows indifference. Na-mi ends up going alone.
At the hospital, she's struck by the name outside one of the rooms: Chiun-hwa (Jin Hee-kyung; Kang So-ra), an old schoolmate from their friendship group 'Sunny', named after a popular song at the time by Boney M. The event triggers memories of her blissful past, with the rest of the film jumping back and forth between the 1980s and the present day.
The other members of the clique include the overly self-conscious Jang-mi (Go Soo-hee; Kim Min-yeong), the cuss queen Jin-hee (Hong Jin-hee; Park Jin-joo), the bookworm Geum-ok (Lee Yun-kyung; Nam Bo-ra), the mysterious Su-ji (Min Hyo-rin) and Bok-hee (Kim Sun-kyung; Kim Bo-mi), who's obsessed with becoming Miss Korea. Na-mi hopes to find the rest of the Sunny clan for one final reunion.
