Man jumps to his death after killing wife

A six-year-old boy was left an orphan yesterday after his mother was killed in a love hotel and his father jumped to his death in an apparent murder-suicide.

Police said initial investigations showed Wong Ching-yiu, 30, committed suicide on the Choi Hung Estate after killing his 26-year-old wife, Chan Heung-chiu, in a Sham Shui Po hotel.

The wife's death was the fourth murder in the city in 10 days.

Last night, the boy, the only child in the family, was under the care of close relatives. The Social Welfare Department said it would follow up on his welfare and counselling needs.

Wong was found drinking beer outside Chi Mei House on Choi Hung Estate at 3.20am yesterday. He lived on the nearby Ping Shek Estate.

Police said that when a security guard approached Wong, he ran into the building and went up to the roof, threatening to jump. His two younger brothers and police negotiators were called to the scene, while firefighters set up an air cushion below.

'He told police negotiators that he had committed an irreversible mistake,' Superintendent Lau Tat-keung, the Sham Shui Po district assistant commander, said.

Just before 6.30am, Wong jumped, landing beside the air cushion. He was declared dead at the scene.

Police officers began a search for Wong's wife after inquiries revealed he had told a friend over the phone that he had killed her. At 12.20pm, police found Chan dead in a bed in the Sunshine Hotel on the second floor of the Hang Shing Building on Kweilin Street. She had been dead for about 12 hours, Lau said, and had died of suffocation. An autopsy will be carried out today.

Closed-circuit television footage showed the couple checked into the hotel at 10.11pm on Thursday, with Wong leaving about 1am yesterday.

In the other murder cases, a mainland woman, 28, died in hospital yesterday after she was found naked and unconscious in a Kowloon City one-woman brothel on April 4.

On Wednesday, Chan Kuen-ching, 68, died in hospital after being assaulted in a dispute over a game of chess in Kwai Chung. Police arrested a 69-year-old neighbour.

Police are also looking for the boyfriend of a nightclub hostess, Wang Rong, 30, also known as Coco, whose body was found in a suitcase floating in Victoria Harbour on April 4.
