Second murder suicide in four days
A man leapt to his death after killing his wife at home in Sai Wan Ho yesterday in the second family murder-suicide in four days.
It prompted the Social Welfare Department to appeal to people with personal or family problems to seek professional help.
The 45-year-old woman's death was also the fifth murder in two weeks, bringing the total in the city so far this year to seven. There were 17 murders reported last year.
In the latest case, police said the 48-year-old man confessed to a relative over the phone that he had killed his wife. After the call, he jumped from the Tai On Building in Shau Kei Wan Road at about 2.45pm. He was taken to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chai Wan, where he was declared dead.
The relative went to the man's home in Foon Yan House in Tung Yan Court, about 400 metres from from the Tai On Building, and found the wife. She was declared dead at the scene by paramedics. Police suspect she was suffocated.
The Social Welfare Department said they would provide help for the surviving family members - two daughters aged 18 and 15.
