Machine Gun Preacher is based on American Sam Childers' memoir Another Man's War. It tells the story of an ex-convict and ex-gang member who goes on a miraculous journey to save the children of war-torn Sudan.
Upon his release from prison, Sam Childers (Gerard Butler) finds that his wife Lynn (Michelle Monaghan) has converted to Christianity. Sam follows his wife's lead and starts a fresh chapter in his life. He decides to make amends for his past mistakes and travels to Uganda to help refugees. He then makes his way to Sudan, where a civil war is raging. Sam is saddened by the conflict, which has left thousands of children abandoned and homeless. He decides to build an orphanage for some of them.
The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) - a rebel group that kidnaps boys and forces them to become soldiers - is unhappy with Sam's efforts. Led by the savage Joseph Kony, the LRA destroys the newly built orphanage.
But Sam does not give up. He has no choice but to take up arms and challenge the LRA head on.
