Shedding tears at times is good
Many people take a dim view of crying, but I disagree. Crying is a good way to express your feelings. Whenever you are very happy, you may shed some tears of joy. When you are sad, you will find the pain more bearable by crying. And that will work for boys, too.
Traditional Chinese culture frowns upon people crying, especially boys and men. However, crying can be beneficial for your mental and physical health.
According to some studies, one of the reasons women often live longer than man may be that they cry more often. Crying can help relieve pain and ease stress and frustration. Rather than being a sign of weakness, crying can help your body stay healthy.
So boys and girls, don't be ashamed if sometimes you find yourself shedding a few tears of joy or sadness.

Thank you for your letter, Fan-ying. It used to be the case that crying was seen as a sign of weakness. But as you say, crying can be good for us physically. It can also positively affect our emotional health and therefore be good for us mentally.
Scientists have found that there are three different types of tears: the tears that keep our eyes moist, the type that are created when our eyes are irritated, such as by dust or onion fumes, and emotional tears. This third type of tear is thought to contain chemicals which cause stress. When we cry, we release these chemicals from our body, and feel less tense.
Having a bit of a cry can also make us feel better and more able to deal with a difficult situation.
But, if you feel very sad every day and feel you have to cry, you must talk to your parents, a teacher or another adult you trust and see a doctor. You could be depressed, and your doctor can help.
