Investing 101 for beginners

Wealth and Asset Management HKUST Business School

The wealth and asset management programme, organised by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School, is aimed for those who do not have time or effort to make investment decisions. The programme's goal is to design a permanent portfolio that satisfies individual goals.

The programme, which is targeted mainly at executives, aims to provide participants with the tools and techniques to enable them to design a portfolio suitable for their individual investment objectives. Students will learn about investment strategies in various assets including stocks, bonds and derivatives. They will also be taught how to invest in mutual funds.

'The major difference from other courses is that our wealth and asset management programme is an unbiased one,' says Professor Milind Rao, professor of business practice in the department of economics at HKUST Business School.

'This programme is about practice, not theory. All the tools and techniques have been applied in real-life investing situations and are based on sound concepts. Unlike most courses, it is unique in offering a clear and unbiased perspective without hidden agendas. This is not a 'get rich quick' scheme but a financial education programme designed to enable participants to design portfolios to create wealth over the long term,' adds Rao.

'If you have some savings and wish to manage and create wealth by investing in liquid assets but do not know how, this programme is for you.'

There will be around 25 students in a class. The course consists of lectures, case studies and discussions along with some in-class readings.
