'When things go right for him, he can run a race'

Most trainers just want their horses to relax in the parade ring, but Andreas Schutz would love to see Empire City rev-up a little more pre-race. The five-year-old got a good gate and a nice ride from Umberto Rispoli helped produce a 35-1 upset, punters backing the horse in from as much as 50-1. Schutz said his gelding's relaxed pre-race demeanour was typical of a horse that lacks competitive spirit. 'He doesn't have his mind on things and he will get his head down walking around like he is in a spelling paddock before a race,' the German said. 'But when things go right for him, he can run a race.

He is too relaxed about things and doesn't have the right spirit for racing.'
