Keeping track of US taxation

Executive Certificate in US Financial Governance HKUSPACE

After the handover, dealings between local and mainland businesses have surged, but Hong Kong's economy retains its special US links.

HKUSPACE has introduced a programme - the Executive Certificate in US Financial Governance and Controls - to help financial professionals learn more about American tax-related issues.

Dr Olivia Lui Lai-wah, leader of the programme, says HKUSPACE had been planning to offer such a course but had to wait until a suitable lecturer was found.

'The lecturer is a certified public accountant (CPA) from the US who hails from Hong Kong. There are very few courses which focus on the tax system of the US and I am lucky to have him on board to teach the course,' she says.

The programme is aimed at US expatriates, investors with US exposure, as wells as CPAs and business executives working in US companies.

'The course provides the most updated knowledge and practices in US income taxation, with focus on business entitles, financial reporting and auditing, corporate control, governance and fraud,' says Lui.

Class size is around 20. Assessment will be through written assignments and examinations. Classes will be held on weekday evenings. Students can elect to study module one covering US taxation, theories and issues for a total of 24 hours, or they can opt for the 21-hour module two on US corporate governance and financial reporting. Those who finish either module will be awarded with an executive certificate.

Applicants should hold a recognised bachelor's degree.
