The island of Ap Lei Chau is unique in the world. Connected to the south of Hong Kong Island by a bridge, and small sampans to Aberdeen opposite the channel, the island combines the modern luxury of high-rise residential blocks and the rustic charm of a genuine fishing village.

One of the more interesting areas on the island is the strip of land north of the island’s main road, the Ap Lei Chau Bridge Road, bordering the Waterfront Promenade and Ap Lei Chau Park.

The Ap Lei Chau Main Street is buzzing with activity, with a wet market for fresh produce, as well as a wide range of eateries and shops offering everything from traditional herbs to Angus beef and Japanese sake. The lively locality also boasts a number of convenient public transportation options to the other parts of the Hong Kong Island.

Close to the sampan pier and the Waterfront Promenade is the Declared Monument of Hung Shing Temple built in 1773, according to the Chinese Temples Committee. The deity Hung Shing is believed to offer protection of fishermen and sea traders. Next to the temple is the Ap Lei Chau Waterfront Promenade Community Garden, where people enjoy a little of gardening fun and get freshly grown vegetable in return.

While the lively Ap Lei Chau Main Street is certainly the place to be for wonderfully prepared seafood on the island, the industrial area in the southern part of the island, facing the open East Lamma Channel offers hidden treasures of more international flavours.
