Some 100 Filipinos carrying mock missiles marched to the Chinese embassy in Manila on Thursday to protest against actions they call “bullying” in the South China Sea.

Forty-two Taiwanese and two mainland Chinese suspects have been arrested in the Philippines over a sophisticated internet scam targeting compatriots back home, police said yesterday.

The daylong clashes involving the hard-line Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters erupted Saturday in the marshy outskirts of Datu Piang and Shariff Saydona Mustapha towns in Maguindanao province and in a coastal village of nearby North Cotabato province.

Gunmen from the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf Islamist group freed two Filipino members of a Jordanian TV crew who they kidnapped last year as they set out to interview the extremists.

About 20 gunmen sprayed the victims’ truck with automatic weapon fire before dawn in the foothills of Mount Kanlaon in Negros Occidental province, firing nearly 300 rounds of ammunition. 

Low-flying search planes spotted three Filipino fishermen drifting at sea and flashing mirrors to signal for help, as authorities stepped up the search Wednesday for 261 others still missing.
