Hong Kong employers win over staff, survey finds
MTR, Swire Properties and CLP beat foreign firms to top the list of most attractive companies
The 10 best employers in the first Randstad award held in the city were all Hong Kong companies, beating the foreign competition. The award is given to companies that employees rate as the best employers.
Randstad, the world's second-largest human resources services firm, has launched the award for the first time in the city this year. The firm, headquartered in the Netherlands, surveyed 4,000 local employees for its Hong Kong award.
MTR Corporation was the winner in the general category, with 56 per cent of employees wanting to work for the rail operator and finding its brand attractive. Swire Properties was second and CLP third.
In the banking and financial services category, Hang Seng Bank was rated the most attractive employer.
Disneyland won the award for the best workplace culture, while Hong Kong Jockey Club was the winner for corporate social responsibility.
The majority of the top 20 winners of the award were Hong Kong companies. Among them were two firms controlled by Li Ka-shing, namely Power Assets (formerly HK Electric) at ninth place and Cheung Kong Infrastructure at 13th spot. In contrast, some dockers at Hongkong International Terminals, a port operator also controlled by Li, are going on strike. The few foreign firms in the top 20 include IBM and UBS.
Swire Pacific, an old "hong" conglomerate listed in Hong Kong, was another big winner, with three subsidiaries - Swire Properties, Cathay Pacific and Dragonair - among the top 10.
"We have a strong representation of Hong Kong organisations. This says a lot of how Hong Kong employers treat their staff. Hang Seng won the bank sector against many multinational banks," said Brien Keegan, the Hong Kong director of Randstad. "One surprising aspect is that not the biggest brands globally won the awards. In many countries, we see local employers performing quite well."
Firms that did well at the award provided career opportunities to their staff, such as MTR, Keegan said.
The companies are rated on criteria including salary, career progression opportunities and working environment.
In Randstad's Hong Kong survey, women preferred to work in companies that are conveniently located, while men stressed career advancement and training.
