We often speak of designers and their muses, but who, or what, do we go to for inspiration? Tracing the word back to its Greek origins, mousa, or muse, referred to one of the nine daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, the goddess of memory. These guardians of the arts inspired poets and thinkers over the centuries, and today, we offer the same name to the sources of beauty and creativity in our lives.

These modern muses range from living people to antique objects, and in the October issue of STYLE, we take a look at some of these exceptional sources of inspiration. In our lead story, we explore how the most popular muse of all nowadays – the ubiquitous A-list celebrity – is influencing the look and feel of luxury brands trying to enhance their brand identities. Loewe, for example, approached Penelope and Maria Cruz to design its latest It bag; Longchamp has an ongoing collaborative venture with Kate Moss; while Manolo Blahnik is working with Sarah Jessica Parker on a new shoe collection.

Then there are those who look to the past. As we discover in our story on vintage luxury products, while the exclusivity of a rare timepiece, handbag or restored trunk certainly makes it a covetable product, it’s also the history and story behind the piece that give it meaning and value.

No discussion on inspiration would be complete with art, design and music, and we offer you plenty of features on those topics this issue. From the HK$35 million private art gallery in Spend It to our accessories shoot, which takes its cue from the smoky, excitement fuelled world of rock and roll, we delve deep into the well of creativity this month.

As for our own muse, we sit down with Phillip Lim and discover how the youngest of six children went from watching his mother work as a seamstress 18 hours a day to becoming one of the most notable designers in the world.

Last but not least, STYLE is offering you a supplementary magazine this October. Exceptional Times is our answer to the modern man’s need for a watch to suit every mood and occasion. As with the other figures and products showcased in the main issue, these timepieces are inspiring, timeless, and most of all, memorable.

A fitting tribute, one would say, to those nine daughters of the Greek goddess of memory.
