US puts China loans on hold

WASHINGTON asked the Export-Import Bank, which provides investment guarantees to US companies, to delay loans involving China until March 23. In a move seen as election year politics, President Bill Clinton said he wanted China to provide proof it did not transfer sensitive nuclear equipment to Pakistan and pledge to abide by the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
