Judges to get language help

Judges and lawyers who do not read Chinese are to be helped by new rules introduced by the acting Chief Justice Noel Power.

Laws brought in last year allowed documents in Chinese to be admitted automatically in evidence without an English translation.

But this has created difficulties for judges and lawyers who do not read characters.

The new rules rectify the oversight by providing for certified translations if needed.

This will be of particular use to lawyers and judges like Mr Justice Power who do not know Chinese.
