Territorial disputes in the region

Agencies

1. The Yomiuri Shimbun

The large-scale demonstrations imperil Japanese who live in China. The Chinese government has a weighty responsibility for causing turmoil by tacitly approving the demonstrations. We urge the Chinese authorities to do everything they can to secure the safety of Japanese individuals and companies in the country. The Chinese government obviously is trying to counter Japan's moves over the Senkaku islands, but at the same time it apparently wants Chinese people to vent their frustrations over economic disparities and other issues ... The Japanese government needs to respond … while keeping in mind that problems stemming from China's domestic circumstances will continually occur. (Tokyo)

2. People's Daily

Japan has been stirring up trouble to foment the issue of the Diaoyu Islands, while the Chinese people have organised demonstrations … Judging from prominent incidents involving Japan in recent years, China has diversified means and channels of expressing the emotions … These diversified means have the same aim, namely resolutely rejecting Japan for confusing the public on the historical issues and safeguarding China's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Based on respecting the spontaneous patriotic emotion among the people, China has been calling on and guiding them to express their patriotic fervour legally and rationally and opposes any illegal and extreme behaviour. (Beijing)

3. The Asahi Shimbun

Japan's relations with China are at a critical turn. The mid-August landing by Hong Kong activists on the disputed Senkaku Islands has been followed by flare-ups of anti-Japanese demonstrations around China. The situation demands extra-discreet handling by politicians. Yet, some politicians are doing the exact opposite with words and actions that are apparently intended to further provoke our neighbours … It is the responsibility of politicians to guard against any flare-up of narrow nationalism and stop mutual distrust from spreading. We call upon all citizens of Japan, China and South Korea to refuse to be affected by words and acts of provocation by just a handful of politicians. (Tokyo)
